Blending gas

Discover how blending gases such as hydrogen and biomethane into the natural gas network can help decarbonise our energy system. Learn more about the benefits, challenges and the UK's blending strategy.

What is blended gas?

Blending gas is the process of combining gases to create a mixture with specific properties. These gas blend properties help to meet certain goals, such as decarbonising the natural gas network, optimising combustion levels or ensuring compatibility with the existing gas infrastructure.

Gas blends have become increasingly important in the energy sector, with efforts to decarbonise natural gas leading to a rise in blending gas. These lower-carbon alternatives might mix natural gas with hydrogen, biomethane or other gases to reduce the overall carbon intensity. The result? A robust and resilient transition towards a more sustainable energy future.
